Week 1

It is the first class of the semester, once again we meet with Miss Anis and she explained the module's rubric. In this module, we are going to do a project about the topic sex education, therefore we would be exploring the design within the theme. Thus Miss Anis told us to group ourselves into a group of 5. Our task would be to find visual examples that can be used in an infographic. Miss Anis also told us that someone would be joining us and brief us on what we are to do throughout the module. So as of now, all I did is find examples of sex educations in Google.

Week 2

We were given a rough script by the client from Miss Anis. We have to find some existing examples of sex education posters to see whether the design application and message is sensitive to the public or not. In Malaysia, sex education is rarely talked about and is rather a taboo subject that is rarely taught in schools. Thus, we need to make sure our designs align to the country's standard which shows sufficient information while remaining within the sensitivity of the country's culture.

We determined some pros and cons of each posters and identify what makes them offensive. After that, Miss Anis told us to come up with an art direction for our infographic to follow. Here is the art direction and style we wanted to make in our infographic.

Week 3

This week the speaker came to brief us further on the project. Our target audience are refugee women whom has no knowledge of the basic anatomy of a human. Not only that, but in their culture, such topic are very taboo to openly talk about. Thus, we have to be wary of the design elements and visuals that we are to create or use to be sensible to their culture.

Week 4

We are told to find some easy to read infographics by every age audience and understand the way it is illustrated and arranged that makes it easy for everyone to understand.

As for our task, we have to make a storyboard according to the script given as part of our proposal. Each group will present their proposal and Miss Anis along with the client will pick the best suited for the infographic video. After that, the other groups will work together to provide the assets for the video.

Week 5

We showed our storyboard to Miss Anis but she said that we need to make the style a bit more consistent.

Week 6

We attended the Sex Education workshop conducted by Launchpad. It was a very informative workshop that I wish people would be more open to learn and teach these to the youths of today.

Week 7

Today is our Proposal presentation, here is our slides:

Week 8

No class because it is independent learning week.

Week 9-10

We are divided into three groups again, consisting of illustrators, animators and compositors. I was grouped in the illustrator group. I was paired with Anita to work on the character assets which consists of a boy, girl and adult male and female along with their nude, undergarments and clothed variations.

Week 11-14

For the illustration process, I work closely with Anita so that our styles will be consistent and similar.
I started with the adult male and proceeded with the turnaround according to the storyboard. We as illustrators should work quickly as if the assets are not ready, the other groups, animators and compositors are not able to proceed with their tasks.

I also made a variety of facial expressions according to the storyboard so that the animators can animate with ease.

Reflection

Throughout this module, I feel like I learned a lot about sex education. Because growing up studying in a government high school, we aren't exposed to these information as sex education is a sensitive subject that is not openly discussed in our society. It is part of our culture where our parents are supposed to be the ones to educate us on sex education but even so, my parents did not do that. I mostly know about sex education through googling rather than being taught by someone. So being in this project made me feel that I've done something for society as these refugee women has fled from their country, for the betterment of their lifestyle. Sex education on its own is a very sensitive subject and some of these refugees do not have access to basic education like we do. They should be taught sex education as some of them may not have an adult to teach them as well as their culture were strict and find what we as Malaysians may think as the norm to be offensive and extremely taboo. I hope that my part in this project pays off and I hope that the infographic video on sex education will shine some light in the importance of sex education in our society, not only to women and girls, but to men and all youths.
