Lecture Notes :
Lecture 5 : Designing Type (Week 5)
This week was another group's turn in presenting the topic: Designing Type. It basically elaborates the Anatomy of Type, along with Purposes a Type is created and characteristics that makes the type work in terms of readability and the processes on how to make a type.

Week 6
No lecture : Reviewing our works for Project 1

Week 7
No lecture : Public Holiday Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Week 8
No lecture: Reviewing our works for Project 1 (Final)

PROJECT 1

Key Artwork (Week 4)

For our very first project, we are tasked to creatively and conceptually use visual and type in combination to create a key artwork to be used in collateral for the subsequent task aka Project 2 down the line. The focus here is to use visual elements and/ graphical elements and the title (type) in  an experimentive, impactful and visually attractive manner. Size of poster should be 50cm x 70cm.

Topics to choose from :
  1. All Ripped Up: Punk Influences on Design
  2. The ABCs of: The Bahaus and Design Theory
  3. Russian Constructivism and Graphic Design
Advises from Lecturers :
  • Create our key artwork on Adobe Illustrator, because this software is vector-based, hence the quality will remain the same even when the artwork is resized.
  • We can use typefaces aside from the 10 typefaces provided. *yay*
Collaterals (Project 2) notes:
  •  Microsite and poster is compulsory to have
  •  We need to have at least 4 collaterals.
Honestly, I am still interested with All Ripped Up: Punk Influences on Design so I'm gonna work on it instead.

I went to do more research on the culture of Punk and here is what I've found out.

Thus, I began searching for an Image for my Project.

We have to make our posters in a 50cm x 70cm canvas size so I edited it in Photoshop and added some filters.

Then, I installed Chronic font from online to experiment with.

Experimentation Process :

After several attempts, I still feel that the word 'Design' isn't hitting the mark for me so while I was taking a break, I watched a YouTube video which has a painted font at the end of the video.

So I got an idea to find for some paint font and found the Permanent Marker from Google Font and went on to try it out.

I added some noise so that it lowers the quality of the image (most punk designs are made from collage and organic looking which is why I did this).

Then, I showed Version 11 to some of my friends and.. They can't even read it. Which means my layout is too confusing for anyone to read, so I decided to change my approach entirely.

This time, I went for a more simple layout using the modular system and axial system. I also added texture for the background so that it looks more handmade and limit the colors I used to yellow, black and white.

After the feedback session, Mr Vinod told us to try to do the layout in B&W as he stresses out that if the form of the layout doesn't work, it wouldn't do any good when we add colour.

After all these designs, Mr Vinod said I'm still not there yet. Time to redo :'D

At this point, I'm still not going anywhere and everyone is moving onto Project 2, so I'm changing my approach altogether.

After getting some more feedback and Mr Vinod's guidance, I've achieved the final outcome:

Feedback

Week 5
General Feedback:
1)Try to sketch out first
2)Work the typography first only then you may use graphical elements or images
3)Try to use black and white rather than color when designing the layout.

Specific Feedback:
Try to pay more attention on the elements of Punk, such as the typeface or the harsh photocopy effect. I still need more exploration to do as I'm still not there yet.

Week 6
Specific Feedback:
"You need to focus on arrangement first. Once that’s done, look into the assortment of typeface-ensure appropriate contrast. Only when this two sits well together can you then move on to introduce colour" (from FB messenger)

Week 7
General Feedback:
1)Refer to the examples posted.
2) We are advised to start with black and white before applying color

Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod told me to focus more on my version 5 as it seems the strongest among the rest as I'm still not getting there yet. He told me to instead emphasize on the word "Punk" and make the "All Ripped up" and "Influences on Design" to be placed in the negative spaces of my Version 5. Figure the key artwork on my own.

Reflection

Experience :
Week 4
This week's experience isn't much different from the previous weeks other than Mr Vinod saying Microsoft Teams suck xD Don't worry Mr Vinod, most of us thought the same too.

Week 5
I find Project 1 very interesting based on the senior's work.. Its a mixture of the past few week's exercises combined into one. I feel like the Typographic systems will come into play to help design the layout for easy readability.

Week 6
This week, there's not much to talk about other than the fact that my works don't really speak Punk, as well as not looking like a key artwork. Apparently, a key artwork should be 50% typography and 50% graphical elements / imagery.

Week 8
I really struggled a lot for this project, made so many variations and layouts but none of them were hitting the mark. So I REALLY need to catch up with the class somehow. (come on brain, think)

Observations :
Week 4
I feel like, many people are having trouble with inter-playing type with image (me included). And we end up making a magazine cover xP

Week 5
We don't really look much into Project 1's work yet but I see some improvements in everyone for their Type and Play exercise.

Week 6
Most of the class didn't really get what a key artwork really is (me included) and we ended up making posters or logos xD

Week 8
Everyone's work is more or less looking like a key artwork, allowing them to advance to Project 2.

Findings :
Week 4
A design doesn't always stop there, keep trying and improving it until you've reached your goal. - Note to self :)

Week 5
Sometimes with design, you just gotta step outside of your work and try new things as this will lead you to discover even more possibilities in composition, enhancing your designing skills.

Week 6
Really need to do further reading on the history of design and art. The lecturers even agreed on implementing a new Art History module because many of the students do not know the history of art and design in general. We don't really know much of the origins of these art movements (mainly because we are born in a different time I guess) so most of our art and design are more influenced by anime or pop culture.

Week 8
I find it hard to make a key artwork in all honesty. It's like a logo but it's not. But what I do understand from it now is that, it should be a form that can be identified based on the elements used to design the layout. Be it graphical elements or unique typefaces or even color.
